Figuring out the main idea in longer passages

Ms. Rosemary's homework.

To figure out the main idea for longer passages - we have to infer an author's unstated central idea [also called - central point or thesis.] We can find the central point in the same way that we find the main idea - by getting a topic and fallow by its major supporting details and minor supporting details.
